Life IS a popularity contest

Forget what they tell you in high school

It really is important to be popular and well-liked. I remember in high school when all the adults were telling me that life wasn't a popularity contest, and now I know that they lied. Working in any career requires good people skills, excelling requires outstanding people skills as well as the ability to make a good and memorable impression.

As a fantasy artist, I'm learning what it means to slave away in total isolation during the week, while going out to shows to sell my art on weekends. The first part has come easier to me than the second, being an introvert. Now I'm learning how to make the most of every possible contact I have with people. Partly for my own sanity - so I don't turn into the reclusive crazy person that I could be - and partly to expand my group of friends.

That's right, selling art is an opportunity to make new friends. I may never see them again, but then again, I might. And you never know who is walking into your booth at a show. Everybody has a story to tell, and I just love a good story! The skill I lack the most at the moment is remembering names, and I have to work on that.

This weekend I'm going to a very small show, where I probably will stick out like a sore thumb. But when somebody walks into my booth, I intend to great them like the friend they might someday be. Life is too short to spend alone.

Cheers!

I agree! and unhappily sometimes "the popular" isn't necessarily "the best". *sigh*
